Grapple with the Past

○═══════► The Story

Grappling with The Past, is a 2.5D platformer game where you play as a boy who’s an aspiring young artist by the name of David! With a dream of making it big, the Boy leaves his home to go on an adventure through his city where he quickly discovers that things seem just a touch out of place! And the further you proceed, the weirder things get!

Some lamp posts are upside down and paintings are floating all over the place. And even further, the more objects start floating all over! Do you dare traverse the difficult terrain, to find your way as a young artist?

○═══════► The Concept

The development team came up with these mechanics after an extensive brainstorming session. We had a variety of different ideas in mind at the start of the session, which were further fleshed out in the game itself. These are related to different genres, mechanics and art styles.

The inspiration for the level design came from a mix of earlier Celeste levels, while also being heavily inspired by the chaotic mess that is Getting Over It, with the level design being  intended as a challenge - with a relatively steep learning curve for the grapple mechanics. For this reason, a lot of effort was put into tweaking the physics system for the YoYo rope.
